Clinical and/or Experiential Classes |
If you are teaching a clinical/experiential class, here are the following key responsibilities:
1. Develop a contact list of your students and clearly communicate to them where they need to meet on the first clinical day.
2. Set clear expectations for student behavior and dress while at clinical.
3. Students who arrive at clinical or experiential class should follow the standards for professional conduct as set forth by the University as well as any agency rules mandated by the agency.
4. Set the standard for arrival, departure, breaks and professionalism. As an example,
a. if students are scheduled to begin patient care at 7 a.m., you may require them to arrive 15 minutes early or an hour early if you are requiring them to research patients prior to patient care.
b. Set the standard and maintain professionalism. Students are to be prepared to care for the patient before they start any hands-on care for the patient.
5. Clinical/experiential faculty must develop professional and collaborative relationships with their agencies and the following key clinical affiliation site personnel:
a. Maintain close working relationship with the course coordinator or lead instructor.
b. Schedule regular meeting at the beginning of each new quarter with the clinical site coordinator and Program coordinator.
6. AUHS Lead Faculty, Clinical Site Coordinator, Clinical Site Directors, and School’s Program Coordinator:
a. Schedule regular meeting with lead faculty and periodically throughout the quarter to go over what is being covered in theory classes and to discuss how the expected student outcomes are being met.
b. Schedule regular meeting with the Clinical Site Coordinator, Clinical Site Directors, and School’s Program Coordinator to discuss clinical assignment workload.
All faculty, both theory and clinical/experiential faculty are responsible for keeping anecdotal notes on any meetings with students. This information needs to be posted on the Student Information System (SIS). Attendance taking is a requirement and must be submitted to Registrar’s office on a weekly basis. The attendance sheet can be printed from SIS System. The clinical/experiential student evaluation tool is based on meeting the requirements of the course.
