Quarter System
The University operates under a quarter system. In this system there are four quarter teaching periods of ten weeks followed by a week of final examinations each year totaling 11 weeks of quarter instructions. In the interim period, there is a break for students. Except as noted on the calendar or by your supervisor, faculty members are also on break during these times. Faculty members on break take must take their PTO/vacation days (see Faculty Handbook) and must complete the appropriate paperwork.
In a quarter systems, credits or units are similar to credits in a semester system but are valued a little differently. Quarter credits are equal to 2/3 of a semester credit. Semester credits are valued at 1.5 times compared to those of a quarter credits. Thus, a 3-credit course in a semester system is usually valued at 4.5 quarter credit hours.
More information regarding these programs is available in the School catalog and the student handbook.
