FACULTY ORIENTATION GUIDE

Clinical | Experiential Standards:


 

  • All rotations are to meet for the required time period.
  • Instructors must be present when students are assigned to clinical/experiential courses unless otherwise arranged in advance with the full knowledge of the program director.
  • If students are present in clinical/experiential learning experience, instructors are not to leave the site without express permission of the program director.
  • Case scenarios in lieu of clinical/experiential are reserved for emergent and unanticipated events. In this case, instructor must have advanced permission of the supervisor.  Case scenarios are utilized for emergencies (accident, sick, etc), major holiday, etc.
  • Attendance must be posted within the allotted time frame for clinical/experiential classes.
  • Presentations are not to be done in lieu of clinical/experiential experience hours- presentations may be presented in pre-conference or post-conference time.
  • Evaluations are not to be done in lieu of clinical experience hours – however you can meet with students individually as time allows during the clinical/experiential experience. These meetings should not exceed 20 minutes each as students are assigned to patients, and or provide other care.
  • A full clinical/experiential day is expected on first and last day If clinical/experiential must be shortened for any reason (illness, injury) then notice must be given to the Clinical Coordinator and/or the program director.  The facility must also be informed.
  • The Unit Manager or Director shall be provided with a copy of the current syllabus as well as student name list, schedule, objectives and student expectations (abilities).
  • Communication and collaboration is the key to great clinical/experiential site experience.
  • If an incident or student accident occurs, please notify a dean, program director or clinical coordinator immediately and follow the procedures given you. Note there may be both University as well as agency procedures to follow.
  • Please note that there may be additional program specific guidelines as well not listed here.
  • Please remember you are our representative at the clinical/experiential site. Be visible, cooperative, and introduce yourself (and your students) to the unit directors, Directors of Nursing, Pharmacy, Education or anyone else you feel they should know.
